- Peninsula, the northernmost point (10 degrees
- 41' S) of the Australian mainland, named by
- Captain James Cook in 1770. The peninsula is
- about 800 km/500 mi long and 640 km/400 mi
- wide at its junction with the mainland. Its
- barrenness deterred early Dutch explorers,
- although the S is being developed for cattle
- (Brahmin type). In the N there are large
- bauxite deposits.
